Submissions: Circumlocution Literary seeks top quality fiction, nonfiction, poetry, artwork, photography, interviews, and reviews. At the moment, we are accepting submissions online. Email your work as a Word or RTF file to circumlocutionlit@gmail.com with the genre followed by the word submission and your name as the subject headline (example: Fiction Submission: Jones, Poetry Submission: Anderson). Include a brief bio in the text of your email. Simultaneous submissions ok with immediate notification. Please wait for a response before sending a second submission. We do not consider previously published material. While we are unable to pay our contributors, published work is eligible for the Peer Choice Award ($25 for the best published piece of the issue) and the end of the year "Crowd Pleaser" Award. Fiction We accept short shorts but rarely use stories more than 8,000 words. Novel excerpts are acceptable if they can stand alone. We do consider genre work (horror, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi) if it transcends the boundaries of the genre. Nonfiction We accept memoir, personal essay, reportage and creative nonfiction. Poetry We accept poems in traditional, experimental and in between styles. Please send 3-5 poems. Reviews Reviews should engage the text (ie. close reading) and may either be academic or personal in their nature. Reviews from 800-1500 words are preferred. Include a brief bio in the text of your email. Please note that we only take reviews of young authors with published books (no chapbooks). Young is subjective, and we have selected our cut-off to be 32 years of age. If you would like to submit your book for review please query for instructions. If you're interested in reviewing a first book of poetry (sorry, no chapbooks), please contact us so that we can assist you if you need to obtain a review copy. (Please note the new address below) If you're interested in sending us a review copy of your first book, please contact our Review Editor to make arrangements. Review Editor Circumlocution Literary 600 Central Ave. #45 Riverside, CA 92507 Art & Photography Email images in JPG format. Include a brief bio in the text of your email. If accepted, we may request a larger and/or uncompressed version. Interviews We find the most interesting interviews are conversations between writers who already have some familiarity with each other. As with the reviews, our focus is on young writers who have recently published their first book. If you have an interview you'd like to do, please send your proposal to circumlocutionlit@gmail.com and indicate "INTERVIEW" in the header. Timing Submissions may be sent to us at any time, year-round. Response Time Our response time varies from four to twelve weeks, with the slowest times usually being August/September and December/January. Awards: PEER AWARDS (VOTED BEST OF EACH ISSUE) * Each contributor (past and present) can nominate 3 pieces from the current issue as the "best of the issue" (it's easy, just pick your three favorite pieces from any genre. Piece is defined as anything that had been submitted to the magazine). If you have a piece in the current issue and are using one of your votes for yourself, please nominate one additional piece (for a total of 4). * Votes are tallied at the end of the month and the piece with the most votes is announced the first week of the following month. * The author of the winning piece will be awarded $25 and the poem will be indicated as having won a Peer Award. * The top three pieces from each issue will be added to a list of finalists for the Crowd Pleaser Prize. This means, that even if your piece is not chosen for a Peer Award, there is still a possibility that it could win the year-end prize. By the end of the year, there should be 12 finalists total, not including possible ties. CROWD PLEASER AWARD (VOTED BEST OF THE YEAR) At the end of the year, the list of finalists and Peer Award winners will be handed off to a respected external judge who will choose the top three pieces of the year. The judge will read and make his/her decisions through a blind reading -- all personal information will be withheld. After coming to his/her decisions, the judge will notify the staff of Circumlocution Literary who in turn will contact the winning writer or artist and arrange for the prize moneys to be sent to them. 1st Place - $100 2nd Place - $70 3rd Place - $30 So, if you add it all up, you'll see that we are still giving away $300 -- but following this format, we can reward more writers and give each contributor a voice in this process. We're excited about this format because we feel that empowers poets, writers, artists, and reviewers and allows them to reward and recognize the work they admire. |
